PRE IB SUMMER COURSE: JULY 16 – 30, 2010

The Pre IB Summer Course is a 15 day course, designed explicitly for students who are about to begin their first IB Diploma year. It is led by highly experienced IB subject specialists, who will ensure you get your IB studies off to a good start. You will be in small, friendly groups with an informal atmosphere, and may well be pleasantly surprised how much fun learning can be, and just how much you can learn in such a short time. This course covers the major IB subjects, helping to prepare you for the year ahead, and giving you a much better idea of what to expect.

The Pre IB course consists of 4 major and 4 minor units. Each major unit lasts three days and consists of 12 hours of intensive study in one subject, plus some homework. The 4 minor units are all essentially concerned with research and writing skills, and are spread over the 15 day course in short study units. Students have a FREE DAY between each major unit when they may join one of our many activities or just meet up with friends in the city.

Students need to apply for the complete course.

The 4 major units are:

Language skills are essential for all IB subjects, as students must be able to express their ideas with clarity if they are to gain the best possible mark for their written work. This applies in all areas of the IB, from Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essays to final examinations. We offer English at 2 different levels – Language A and Language B, so whether your interest is in Literature or Language, we have a course to suit your needs. For German native speakers planning to take German as their IB A language, we offer German Language A as an alternative during this unit.

IB students must study Mathematics. We offer Mathematics at 3 different levels, so that whether you have chosen HL, SL or Math Studies, we have a course to meet your requirements. Each of our courses also contain units specifically designed to help you develop better ‘Calculator Skills’ which are essential if you are to maximise your potential in any Mathematics exam.

Science is another compulsory area of the IB. We offer a choice of Biology, Chemistry or Physics, where you will be introduced to important areas of the core material, and revise some of the most important concepts in the subject of your choice. You will also be provided the opportunity to practice and improve data analysis and report writing skills.

Students must also study a subject from the Individuals and Societies section of the IB programme. We offer Economics, Geography and History. You will be given the opportunity to examine current thought in a critical manner in the subject of your choice. You will also practice analytical and writing skills using material selected from IB examinations.

The 4 minor units are:

In the Study Skills sessions, you will be introduced to a wide variety of ways to enhance your learning. These will include ideas on how to manage your time and workload; how to set yourself realistic goals and how to reach them; how to deal with distractions and manage stress. Working in small groups, you will be required to make both a short oral and a short written presentation.

Internal Assessment is an important component in all subjects and a good score can make a difference to your grade. In this session, you will be introduced to Internal Assessment in Science. You will learn about the IB marking system and how it will be applied to your work. You will also practice some of the skills you will need, such as ‘Experimental Design’ and ‘Data Presentation and Processing’.

Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay, together, are worth 3 IB Diploma points – maximizing your score here, can make a real difference to your overall points score. Again, these sessions will introduce the IB requirements and allow you some time to practice your basic skills.

Having a sound understanding of what will be required of you during your IB Diploma years, will enable you to plan your time and make the most efficient and effective use of it. Knowing where the goals are and keeping the target in mind will help keep you motivated through two tough years.
